21 Greenfield Airports that are set to open in the near future.
The aviation industry is about to get a huge boost! The Ministry of Civil Aviation intends to build 21 additional airports across India in the next years.
In the next four to five years, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) plans to create new airports as well as expand and upgrade many existing airports for Rs 25,000 crores. This comprises the extension and alteration of existing terminals, the construction of new terminals, the expansion or reinforcement of existing runways, technical blocks, aprons, and the control towers of the Airport Navigation Services. In addition, three PPP (Public-Private Partnership) airports in Delhi, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad have announced development plans of Rs 30,000 crore by 2025, according to V. K. Singh, Minister of State for Civil Aviation, in a recent written reply in the Rajya Sabha.
The government created the Greenfield Airport Policy in 2008, which lays out criteria and procedures for the construction of new greenfield airports in India. According to this regulation, every airport developer (including state governments) interested in constructing a facility in the nation must submit a proposal to the Civil Aviation Ministry. There are two steps to the project approval process: ‘Site-Clearance’ and ‘In-Principle’ clearance.
Enlargement and alteration of existing terminals, new terminals, expansion or reinforcement of existing runways, aprons, airport navigation services control towers, and technical blocks are all part of the development work.Civil aviation infrastructure upgrades and modernization is a continuous process that concerned airport operators undertake from time to time, depending on land availability, commercial viability, socio-economic considerations, and traffic demand/willingness of airlines to operate to/from such airports.
As a result, the ministry occasionally gets bids for the construction of airports from airport developers or state governments. Mopain Goa, Shirdi, Sindhudurg, Navi Mumbai in Maharashtra; Kalaburagi, Hassan, Bijapur, and Shimoga in Karnataka; Datia (Gwalior) in Madhya Pradesh; Noida (Jewar) and Kushinagar in Uttar Pradesh; Hirasar and Dholera in Gujarat; Karaikal in Puducherry; and Bhogapuramand, DagadarPakyong, Kannur, Durgapur, Sindhudurg, Shirdi, Oravakal, Kalaburagi, and Kushinagar are the eight airports that have already been operationalized.
The airports at Hollongi (Arunachal Pradesh) and Hirasar (Gujarat) were built by AAI for Rs. 646 crore and Rs. 1405 crore, respectively. On 3.12.2021, the Public Investment Board proposed the development of Dholera (Gujarat) airport at Rs. 1305 crore (Phase I). The following are the estimated project costs for the remaining eleven Greenfield airports: Mopa (Rs 3000 Cr. ), Navi Mumbai (Rs 1.6,250 Cr. ), Bijapur (Rs 150 Cr. ), Hassan (Rs 592 Cr. ), Shimoga (Rs 220 Cr. ), Data (Rs 200 Cr. ), Jewar (Rs 8,914 Cr.-Phase I), Karaikal (Rs 50 Cr. ), (Rs 2,500 Cr.).
