4,500 Cities on the Cleanliness Radar: Swachh Survekshan 2023!
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has announced that the eighth edition of Swachh Survekshan (SS) – SS 2023 will be conducted from July 1 to October 2, 2023. Over 4,500 cities, including 62 Cantonment Boards, will be assessed under this survey.
The survey will be conducted in three phases:
- Self-Assessment Phase: This phase will be conducted from July 1 to August 31, 2023. During this phase, all the participating cities will self-assess their performance on various sanitation parameters.
- Peer Verification Phase: This phase will be conducted from September 1 to October 15, 2023. During this phase, a team of experts will visit the participating cities to verify their self-assessments.
- Third-Party Assessment Phase: This phase will be conducted from October 16 to 31, 2023. During this phase, a third-party agency will visit the participating cities to conduct an independent assessment of their sanitation performance.
The final results of SS 2023 will be announced on October 2, 2023.
The SS is a citizen-centric survey that aims to improve the sanitation conditions in urban areas of India. The survey has been instrumental in driving positive changes in the sanitation sector in the country. In the last seven years, the survey has helped to make India open defecation free (ODF) and has also led to significant improvements in waste management practices in urban areas.
The SS 2023 is expected to further accelerate the progress made in the sanitation sector in India. The survey will focus on achieving circularity in waste management and will give priority to the principle of 3Rs – Reduce, Recycle and Reuse. The survey will also emphasize the need for phased reduction of plastic, plastic waste processing, encourage waste to wonder parks and zero waste events.
The SS 2023 is a major initiative of the government to improve the quality of life of citizens in urban areas. The survey is expected to help create a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable environment in India.
