Fame II envisions subsidies and other measures to encourage wider adoption of EVs for the 7,090 e-buses, 55,000 e-cars, 5 lakh e-three-wheelers, and 10 lakh e-two-wheelers.
The Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) has also developed a draught National Automotive Policy that covers the issues of the auto sector as a whole, as well as the ambitious Auto Mission Plan 2016-26.
The Phase II project follows the success of the previous Fame India scheme’s Phase I, which identified 520 sanctions for charging stations or infrastructure across India. The ministry has approved 2,877 Electric vehicle charging stations in 68 cities throughout 25 states/UTs, as well as 1,576 charging stations along 9 expressways and 16 highways. As of July 15th, 2022, there will be 532 operational charging stations, with 479 and 53 charging stations under the Fame I and Fame II schemes, correspondingly.
On July 1, the Ministry of Power approved the amended centralised standards and guidelines on battery storage for EVs which allowed any individual or organisation to set up the public charging infra if they meet the analytical, safety, and achievement social rules finally agreed by the authorities – Ministry of Power, Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) and Central Electricity Authority (CEA), that are subordinate to time-to-time legislative changes.
In Phase II of the FAME India project, the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) approved a Rs 1,000 crore budget for the building of EV charging infrastructure.
Additional addition to the strategy has been the statewide ‘Go Electric’ Campaign, which was jointly launched on February 19, 2021, by the Ministries of Power, Road Transport and Highways, Heavy Industries, and NITI Aayog.
The campaign aims to educate the general public about the advantages of e-mobility, tell potential EV owners about different government incentives for EV adoption, generate interest, and convert it into demand.
