Status Report on the Mumbai Trans Harbour Extension Project

Mumbai, the island metropolis that relies largely on public infrastructure and transit for connection, will soon get a facelift in the form of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL). The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority is building a 22-kilometre-long project that would connect Sewri in Mumbai to Chirle in Navi Mumbai (MMRDA).

The project, which was intended in the 1990s, hit several difficulties and was finally resurrected in 2016. The project’s development began in April 2018, with a predicted completion date of September 2023. The project is broken down into four packages. Research gives a deep perspective into the proposed project and its influence on the real estate market.

Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) has

According to the plan, the Mumbai terminus of the project would have a three-level junction connecting to the Eastern Freeway and the Sewri-Worli link. There will be interchanges at Shivaji Nagar and Chirle on the Navi Mumbai end.

A four-kilometre steel span in the centre of the concrete link would allow ships to easily transfer to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) underneath the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link. View and noise barriers will be installed at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and the Sewri mudflat region.

A 5.6-kilometre-long makeshift footbridge, which is presently being used to move equipment, will be turned into a bird-watching platform in the future. The project is currently in full swing.

The facilities include an intelligent transportation system (ITS) and changeable message signs, both of which are critical for a maritime link.

Tolls on the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link

MMRDA planned toll rates for the project in 2012 of Rs 175 for automobiles, Rs 265 for Light Commercial Trucks (LCV), Rs 525 for Heavy Commercial Vehicles (HCV), and Rs 790 for multi-axle vehicles, which they want to collect till 2045. However, as building costs rose, JICA, the project’s major investor, proposed raising toll prices. More information will be published when the project nears completion and operation.

Current status of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link

The project was initially planned to be built under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model, but the MMRDA later revised the concept and completed it as an EPC model- Engineering, Procurement, and Construction. Approximately 85 percent of MTHL’s construction work has been finished as of August 2022, with the remainder projected to be executed by September 2023.

The Real Estate Impact of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link

The development is predicted to perform well in terms of accessibility and real estate. It would improve access to the projected Navi Mumbai International Airport, the Mumbai Port Trust, and the JNPT. The project will be a key differentiator for the real estate of adjacent localities like as Turbhe, Ghansoli, Airoli, Ulwe, Dronagiri, Vashi, and Panvel due to its convenient connectivity to South Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. Taking advantage of the increased need for housing units, several well-known real estate developers, including Godrej Properties, Arihant Group, and Marathon Group, have already developed residential projects along the MTHL project.
