BMC will construct a high-speed corridor between Versova and Dahisar.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced plans to construct a high-speed road corridor linking Versova and Dahisar to improve traffic flow between north and south Mumbai. The Versova-Dahisar Link Road (VDLR), a 24.29-kilometer arterial road, is the second phase of the Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP).
The road begins at the Lokhandwala junction, where the projected Bandra-Versova Sea Link Road (BVSLR) would stop, and will give further access to the north. This high-speed corridor is designed to transform Mumbai transit by cutting travel time by 70%. This will reduce congestion on the Link Road, the SV Road, and the Western Express Highway, which are now the sole routes connecting south and north Bombay.
The VDLR will also assist the city achieve its environmental goals by reducing its carbon impact. The VDLR will be built in four packages, each of which will include subterranean tunnels and high bridges. The first package will cover 4.5 kilometres and will comprise a basket bridge, raised lanes, and a stilted arterial route. This phase will link the Versova VBSL interchange to Lokhandwala. The second phase, 7.48 kilometres long, would connect Lokhandwala to Mindspace on Goregaon through an elevated road and a cable-stayed bridge.
The third phase will be 5.32 kilometres long and will connect Mindspace to Charkop through an open-to-sky ramp and an underground tunnel spanning between Charkop and Malad. Eventually, the last phase will span 6.95 kilometres and include a basket bridge, an arterial road, and a cable-stayed bridge.
The project’s final plan is complete, and BMC intends to begin construction on the first tunnel this year. It’s a large project that will cost Rs 9,980 crore and take six years to complete. Now, the first phase of the MCRP is approaching completion, with 75% of the building work finished, according to BMC statistics. The first phase of the project will span 10.58 kilometres, connecting Nariman Point on Mumbai’s southernmost tip with the Bandra-Worli-Sea Link (BWSL).
