Elevating Transportation: Railways’ Vision for an 11 km Corridor Around New Delhi Station!
The Northern Railways has announced a plan to construct an 11-km elevated corridor around the Paharganj side of New Delhi Railway Station. The project aims to provide multiple entry points to the station from Basant Lane, Chelmsford Road, and Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Marg, with exit ramps situated on Asaf Ali Marg and Bhavbhuti Marg.
The elevated corridor is expected to reduce traffic congestion around the station and improve accessibility for passengers. It will also provide a dedicated lane for buses and taxis, which will help to reduce pollution in the area.
The project is expected to cost around Rs 4,700 crore and is expected to be completed within three years. The tender for the project has already been floated and the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) is holding a pre-bid meeting on August 2, 2023.
The elevated corridor is part of the New Delhi Railway Station Mega Redevelopment Plan. The redevelopment plan also includes the construction of a new terminal building, a pedestrian boulevard connecting the station to Connaught Place, and seamless connectivity to the Delhi Metro network through multi-modal transit hubs.
The elevated corridor is a welcome move and is expected to have a number of benefits, including:
- Reduced traffic congestion: The elevated corridor will provide a dedicated lane for buses and taxis, which will help to reduce traffic congestion around the station. This will make it easier for passengers to reach the station and will also reduce pollution in the area.
- Improved accessibility: The elevated corridor will provide multiple entry points to the station from different parts of the city. This will make it easier for passengers to reach the station, especially those who are coming from areas that are not well-served by public transportation.
- Enhanced safety: The elevated corridor will be elevated above the ground, which will make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists. It will also help to reduce the risk of accidents between vehicles and pedestrians.
The elevated corridor is a major infrastructure project that is expected to have a positive impact on the city of Delhi. It will help to improve traffic flow, reduce pollution, and make it easier for people to travel to and from New Delhi Railway Station.
