Itanagar Hollongi Airport, commonly known as Donyi Polo Airport, is Arunachal Pradesh’s third airport, following Pasighat and Tezu. The new airport’s development is complete, and the project is set to open in October 2022. Itanagar had no airport prior to the establishment of Hollongi Airport. At a range of 80 kilometres, the nearest airport was Lilabari Airport in Assam’s North Lakhimpur district. The State Cabinet has authorised the renaming of the Greenfield Hollongi Airport as Donyi Polo Airport, which is billed as the government’s flagship initiative to increase connectivity in the northeast.

Itanagar Hollongi Airport: Project information and an update

Itanagar Hollongi Airport is stretched over 320 hectares and cost Rs 645.63 crore to construct. The Airports Authority of India owns and operates the first airport in the border state of Arunachal Pradesh (AAI). The site has seen the completion of all main civil structures, including the runway, air traffic control (ATC) tower, and temporary terminal building. AAI has previously organised numerous regulatory authority examinations in accordance with established criteria. It has successfully completed flight calibrations and aircraft test landings. In accordance with the Department of Civil Aviation, these flight calibrations and aircraft test landings took place from July 19, 2022 to July 23, 2022. The DGCA examination took place on July 27th and 28th, 2022, with the BCAS (Bureau of Civil Aviation Security) inspection taking place on August 4th, 2022. The State Government is also in discussions with airline companies about launching frequent commercial flights from Itanagar Hollongi Airport to the rest of the country.

Terminal design of Itanagar Hollongi Airport

The runway at Itanagar Airport is 2,300 metres long. It is ideal for the functioning of big passenger aeroplanes such as the Airbus-320 and the Boeing 747.

Throughout peak hours, it has eight check-in desks and can handle 300 people. The terminal building at Hollongi Airport is a 4,100-square-meter energy-efficient facility with a rainwater collecting system. It also features a glass façade that provides a breathtaking view of the Himalayas.

Itanagar Hollongi Airport’s Real Estate Impact

The creation of an airfield will stimulate tourism, increase collaboration, and bolster Arunachal Pradesh’s security. The state shares an international border with three countries: China (1,160 kilometres) and Bhutan and Myanmar (a few hundred kilometres).

It will interconnect Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities to Central Indian urban areas. As a result of this, both foreign and local visitors will be able to visit the state more readily. Previously, the closest airport to Itanagar was roughly 60 kilometres away in North Lakhimpur, Assam. Tourists have to fly through Lilabari Airport to get here.

Guwahati, Silchar, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Tezpur, Lilabari, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh (2), Tripura, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Sikkim now have 15 active airports. The Airport Authority of India built Hollongi Airport to improve aviation connectivity in mountainous areas.

The airport was supposed to open on August 15, 2022, to commemorate India’s 75th anniversary of independence, however it was delayed owing to DGCA not receiving the airline schedule. The enormous project’s foundation, on the other hand, has been finished. The DGCA will draught flight schedules in October, and the airport will be opened immediately after.
