Sabarigiri Airport, also known as Sabarimala International Airport or Kottayam International Airport, is a proposed airport in Kerala’s Erumely district. The development will be located on 2,263 acres of land in Cheruvally Estate in Manimala Panchayat, Kanjirappally Taluk. It is on the path to the Sabarimala Temple, a popular pilgrimage place in India. Furthermore, it is around 140 kilometres from the state capital of Thiruvananthapuram and approximately 110 kilometres from Kochi.
Sabarimala International Airport Is Required.
The Sabarimala Temple is located in Kerala’s Pathanamthitta district, in the Western Ghats. It is one among India’s holiest sanctuaries, with roughly 50 million tourists each season beginning in mid-November. The one and only way to get to the hill shrine right present is via car. The government intended to build an airport nearby to alleviate overcrowding during the festival period.
As a result, the Kerala government approved the airport’s development in February 2017, and the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC) was tasked with conducting a feasibility study.
When completed, this would be the state’s sixth airport.
Sabarimala Airport: Project Specifications
Once completed, the airport is planned to serve 16.9 million passengers in 2026, increasing to 32.9 million in 2035 and 64.2 million in 2052. In terms of cargo, the airport will manage around 4.45 metric tonnes in 2026 and 7.85 metric tonnes in 2035. The project, which is expected to cost Rs 3,900 crore, would gain from both aero and non-aero activity.
