Everything You Need to Know About the Atal Rohtang Tunnel

After over a decade of struggle, an instance of infrastructural wonder has become complete on the Leh-Manali route.

The Rohtang tunnel, also known as the Manali to Leh tunnel, is an astonishing construction cut down beneath the Rohtang Pass, giving it the world’s longest highway tunnel. It is dedicated after former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

The Rohtang tunnel, at a height of 13,050 feet, goes through the Pir-Panjal range. The Manali-Leh tunnel shortens the journey by 46 kilometers. Furthermore, the travel from Spiti Valley to Lahaul Valley and Manali, which previously took roughly 5 hours, will now require only 15 minutes.

The longest highway tunnel in the world

The Rohtang tunnel is 9.02 kilometers long and was built by the BRO (Border Roads Organisation). It links Lahaul and Spiti Valleys to Manali and enables access throughout all weather conditions. Even during months of November to April, the Spiti and Lahaul Valleys are cut off from the rest of the world. As a result, the Manali to Leh tunnel will allow for smooth traffic across the snow-capped mountains.

Armed personnel now have easier access to the high-tension regions of Leh and Ladakh thanks to the opening of the Atal tunnel.
