Flying High: Discovering Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport!
The ‘City of Dreams’, Mumbai, is served by the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). Mumbai Airport, formerly known as the “Sahar Airport,” was renamed in 1999 after the Chhatrapati of the Maratha Empire, and the title “Maharaj” was added in 2018.
CSMIA is located in Mumbai’s Vile Parle East and is conveniently connected to the rest of the city by local train and road. Two terminals are located on 750 hectares of land, and MIAL (Mumbai International Airport Limited) manages its operation.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport has two terminals that are now open for business:
Santacruz’s Terminal 1 for Domestic Flights
Domestic and international flights depart from Sahar’s Terminal 2.
They are physically separated and must travel that distance in a car for 15 to 20 minutes. But interestingly, the airside facilities are the same at both ports.
The domestic low-cost carrier terminal, sometimes referred to as the Santacruz Mumbai Airport, is located in Terminal 1. After Sahar Mumbai Airport opened, the city’s first passenger terminal was given the name Terminal 1.
It currently has 11 bridges for passenger boarding after formerly being separated into three sub-terminals, 1A, 1B, and 1C.
Terminal 2: Located in Sahar, Terminal 2 was created by Larsen & Toubro (L&T). It serves as the primary airport for all incoming and outgoing foreign flights. This terminal has an unusual X-shaped structure and works on four levels:
Stage 1 for Transportation
Arrivals at Level 2
For domestic departures, Level 3
For international departures, level 4
