From Ganges to the City of Joy: Exploring the Varanasi-Kolkata Expressway!

The Varanasi-Kolkata Expressway is a 610 km (380 mi) long, six-lane, greenfield access-controlled expressway that will connect the holy city of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh with the capital of West Bengal, Kolkata, through the capital of Jharkhand, Ranchi. It will run almost parallel with the Grand Trunk Road or the Asian Highway 1, and will pass through four states–Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal.

The expressway is a part of Bharatmala Pariyojana, and it will reduce both travel time and distance, from 12-14 hours to only 6-7 hours, and from 690 km (430 mi) to 610 km (380 mi). It will start from Chandauli district in Uttar Pradesh, and will terminate near Uluberia, Howrah district, West Bengal.

The expressway is currently under construction, and it is expected to be completed by 2026. The total cost of the project is estimated to be ₹12,000 crore (US$1.6 billion).

The expressway will have a number of features that will make it a safe and efficient way to travel. These features include:

  • Six lanes, with the potential to expand to eight lanes in the future
  • Access-controlled, meaning that only authorized vehicles will be allowed on the expressway
  • Wide medians to separate traffic
  • Intelligent transportation system (ITS) to manage traffic flow
  • Crash barriers to prevent head-on collisions

The Varanasi-Kolkata Expressway is expected to have a number of benefits, including:

  • Reduced travel time and distance between Varanasi and Kolkata
  • Improved connectivity between the four states that it passes through
  • Increased economic activity in the region
  • Reduced pollution levels
  • Improved safety for road users

The Varanasi-Kolkata Expressway is a major infrastructure project that will have a significant impact on the region. It is expected to boost economic growth, improve connectivity, and reduce pollution. The expressway is also expected to make travel between Varanasi and Kolkata safer and more efficient.
