Iconic Symbol of Governance: Unveiling the New Parliament Building’s Fascinating Facts and Architecture!

On May 29, 2023, Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi officially opened the new Parliament building. The former, 96-year-old structure has been replaced with the current one, which was created as part of the government’s Central Vista Redevelopment Project. The Sengol, a traditional gold sceptre, was also added by the prime minister to the new structure. According to Modi, the New Parliament House represents the hopes and aspirations of 140 crore Indians and was dedicated to the country.

The New Parliament Building is situated in New Delhi’s Gokul Nagar neighbourhood along Sansad Marg. The Rashtrapati Bhavan is around 750 metres away, and important government structures such the Hyderabad House, Vijay Chowk, the India Gate, the National War Memorial, etc. are all nearby.

The new Parliament building, which occupies a space of around 65,000 square metres, is triangular in shape for best space utilisation and has more seats than the previous building had. The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha’s legislative chambers are located there. Additionally, the new Parliament building is an energy-efficient, Platinum-rated Green Building.

The Lok Sabha can fit up to 88 people in the new Sansad Bhavan, while the Rajya Sabha can hold up to 384 people. For combined sessions, the Lok Sabha Hall has a maximum capacity of 1,272 seats.

Indian culture is reflected in the architecture of the new structure. The Rajya Sabha’s design concept is based on the national flower, the lotus, whereas that of the Lok Sabha is based on the national bird, the peacock. The banyan tree, which is India’s national tree, stands in the complex’s courtyard.
A central lounge, a Constitutional Hall, and contemporary office spaces outfitted with the newest communications equipment, such as digital language interpretation and programmable microphones, are also included in the structure. Additionally, the new Sansad Bhavan has roomy committee rooms with the newest audio-visual equipment.
The purpose of the central lounge is to encourage interaction among the members of the parliament.

The new structure is Divyang Friendly and is simple for those with impairments to utilise.
