India’s Infrastructure Revolution: What’s in Store for 2023!
Navi Mumbai International Airport
The Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMI) is India’s second international airport, after the one in Mumbai. This airport has entered the public-private partnership (PPP) model for USD 600 million. A SPV was set up for this airport, which is scheduled to be operational by 2024.
DMIC project
This initiative aims to promote economic development through the establishment of logistics hubs, industrial zones, airports, highways, and power plants, as well as schools and hospitals. The DMIC project, which covers a distance of 1,483 kilometers from Delhi to Mumbai and has a budget of USD 90 billion, is expected to provide employment opportunities and significantly boost the nation’s GDP by 2024.
Mumbai Trans Harbour Link
The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link having a budget of US$ 2.2 billion intends to connect the eastern terminus of the Mumbai- Pune Expressway to the western terminus of the Coastal Road. This bridge road, with 6 lanes and a length of 21.8 kilometers, is estimated to accommodate 70,000-80,000 vehicles annually and is expected to be operational by December 2023, announced by Chief Minister Eknath Sharma.
Chenab River Railway Bridge
A joint venture between three engineering firms Afcons Infrastructure (India) VSL India Ultra Construction and Engineering Company South Korea with a budget of USD 92 million The overall bridge was constructed in August 2022 but is expected to be opened to rail traffic in December 2023 or early 2024.
Bharatmal project
The Bharatmal project is estimated to cost USD 130 billion and aims to construct or upgrade almost 34,800 km of National Highway and Border Roads to ensure road connectivity across the country. The project will include National Highways, Bridges, Flyovers, Bypasses, Ring Roads, Elevated Corridors, Tunnels, and Overpasses to improve India’s overall connectivity, especially in the Northeast region.
Zoji-LA and Z-MORH
The two important tunnels, Zoji-LA and Z-MORH, are situated on the route between Leh and Srinagar on the Indian side of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. These two tunnels are built in a 2-lane, 2-directional single-tube tunnel system. They will provide an all-weather approach to the road and will reduce the travel time from Ladakh to Kashmir from 3 hours to 15 minutes.
Narmada Valley
The Narmada Valley development project is estimated to be worth USD 30 billion and aims to manage the water resources in Narmada Valley by constructing a network of Canals and over 3,000 Dams in the Narmada River basin to generate water and improve water supply for drinking and agriculture. The project also includes the construction of a dam, which is planned to be a 1,450 MW Hydroelectric Project.
Inland Development Waterways Project
With a USD 600 million investment and technical support from the World Bank, the Inland Development Waterways as a part of strategic infrastructure aims to build 111 national Waterways in India by March 2023. Inland waterways will make it easier for ships and goods to move. According to the Indian government, the expansion of inland waterways may contribute to achieving zero carbon emissions in the country by 2070.
