Information on the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link Map!

Mumbai, India’s financial center, has a population of over 1.24 crore people and relies significantly on public infrastructure and transportation for connection. Mumbai is getting a makeover in terms of infrastructure development as the city grows. One such expansion of infrastructure is the construction of the 21.8-kilometer-long Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, which would connect Sewri to Navi Mumbai’s Chirle via the JNPT Road. The MMRDA (Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority) is building the sea link.

Regarding the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link

On January 11, 2023, MMRDA successfully launched the first longest Orthotropic Steel Deck (OSD) of roughly 22 km in MTHL package-2. The first OSD of package-2 connecting Mumbai and Navi Mumbai is 180 metres long and weighs 2,300 metric tonnes. MTHL has already deployed 15 of the 32 OSD spans included in the MTHL package-2.

90% of the work on the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link is completed as of December 2022. The construction of link ramps and crossover loops connecting neighbouring highways to the main bridge has begun.

The Mumbai Trans Harbour link would be a six-lane motorway that will run from Sewri to Chirle near Nhava Sheva, across the Thane creek.  L&T and IHI Corporation are developing the first package, which spans 10.38 km from Sewri to Thane Creek. Tata Projects and Daewoo E&C are developing the second package, which spans 7.807 km from Thane Creek to Shivaji Nagar. L&T is developing the third package, which would connect the Mumbai Trans Harbour link with state roads 52 and 54, as well as national route 4B at Chirle, Navi Mumbai.

The fourth component of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link is Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), which contains the Toll and Transport Management System as well as the Project’s Equipment Installation.

When will the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link open?

According to Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, the MTHL would be operational by November 2023. The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, which is projected to be finished by 2023, would be India’s longest marine link. The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link is expected to cost roughly Rs 17,843 crores to build. Originally planned to be developed under the PPP model, the MMRDA eventually altered its mind and built the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link using the EPC approach – engineering, procurement, and construction. Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) funds around 85% of the project costs. Tanaka Akihiko, president of JICA, and other delegations will observe the building of India’s longest sea bridge, the MTHL, on March 16, 2023.  “MTHL is India’s ambitious civil project.” The MTHL project idea has been under discussion for over 30 years. MMRDA is now carrying out this project with the assistance of the government and financial assistance from JICA. The new entry to the mainland will be the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), a six-lane access-controlled sea bridge with a route alignment linking Sewri in south Mumbai and Chirle in Navi Mumbai. Mumbai will no longer exist after the conclusion of this project.

It is regarded as an island city. MMRDA is eager to serve people with secure and world-class infrastructure,” stated S.V.R. Srinivas, IAS, MMRDA’s metropolitan commissioner.

Mumbai Trans Harbour Link includes.

The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link will include a three-level interchange connecting to the Eastern Freeway and the Sewri-Worli connector, according to the plan. On the Navi Mumbai side, there will be interchanges at Shivaji Nagar and Chirle.

In the midst of the concrete Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, a four-kilometer steel bridge will allow ships to easily pass to the JNPT underneath the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link. View barriers will also be installed at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and noise barriers will be installed in the Sewri mudflat region, which is a safe sanctuary for migratory birds and flamingos.

The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link will also contain amenities like as an intelligent transportation system (ITS) and changeable message signs, which are critical for a sea link. The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link’s top speed will be limited to 100 kilometres per hour. The Mumbai traffic control centre will handle congestion on the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link utilising CCTV cameras.

The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link will have a platform for viewing flamingos and other migrating birds. The MMRDA has constructed a 5.6-kilometer temporary bridge to move equipment and workers on the project, which will be transformed into a bird observation platform. This will benefit the MMRDA by avoiding the cost of dismantling the bridge.

Toll on the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link

According to states, the MMRDA proposed toll charges for the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link in 2012 of Rs 175 for automobiles, Rs 265 for LCV, Rs 525 for HCV, and Rs 790 for multi-axle trucks. However, because to rising construction costs, JICA, the project’s major investor, has proposed an increase in toll charges, which would be known closer to the completion and operation of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link. The MMRDA intends to collect tolls until 2045 in order to recoup its investment in the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link.

Land purchase for the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link

Close to 130 hectares of land are required for the building of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, of which CIDCO has provided around 88 hectares. Because the rest of the land is private, the MMRDA will pay the owners. The Mumbai Port Trust will provide the MMRDA about 27 hectares of land.

Benefits of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link

  • Reduced travel time between Navi Mumbai and Mumbai city and decongestion of the metropolis due to alternate route between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.
  • Positive influence on the Navi Mumbai real estate market.
  • increased communication between JNPT port and Mumbai Port Trust.
  • Access to the Mumbai-Pune Expressway.
