Prime Minister Modi stated this initiative by the government to be his obligation to fulfill the needs of the region, being the representative of its Lok Sabha. The development of the airport strives to attain a better footfall of followers of Buddhism from home and abroad. The new Kushinagar International Airport will be built at an estimated cost of Rs. 260 Crore, marking this step to be the government’s endeavor to connect the pilgrimage to the rest of the world.

The inauguration day was flagged by the first inaugural flight arriving from Sri Lanka carrying many Buddhist devotees and dignitaries landed on the land of Buddhist Pilgrimage. To add to the auspiciousness of the day, they brought the relic from Waskaduwa Sri Subhuddhi Rajvihaa Temple in Sri Lanka.

Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia confirmed that the first flight from the Kushinagar International Airport to New Delhi would take off on November 26.

The civil aviation minister stated, “The Journey of Lumbini, Bodhgaya, Sarnath, Kushinagar, Sravasti, Rajgir, Sankisa and Vaishali of Buddhist Circuit will be covered in lesser time.” Kushinagar International Airport is the ninth Airport of Uttar Pradesh, while the government has assured the construction of more international airports in the state. Meanwhile, the work is going on fast Pace at Ayodhya, Aligarh, Chitrakoot, Moradabad, and Shravasti Districts.
During the course of events, Prime Minister Modi claimed Buddhism to be “Vaishvik” (universal), marking Buddha’s words “Appa Deepo Bhava” as a message for India to become self-reliant. PM Modi’s recently launched ‘Gatishakti-National Master Plan’ aims at easing the governance and improving the infrastructure of the nation. Under the UDAN scheme, more than 900 new routes have been approved, out of which 350 air services have started.
This new terminal can handle over 300 passengers during peak hours. The development of this airport is a significant highlight of India and Sri Lanka’s ties and improving relations in different sectors. The government has managed to push through these major projects last year, such as the green-field airport.
