News: Panvel-Karjat Suburban Route Is Expected To Be Finished By March 2025.

The Panvel-Karjat suburban corridor is currently under construction and is expected to be finished by March 2025. According to MRVC authorities, work of a flyover and bridges along the Panvel and Karjat suburban routes is now ongoing. When finished, the corridor will minimise commuter travel time by 30 minutes, allowing them to reach Panvel from CST in one hour and 45 minutes.

The Panvel-Karjat suburban railway route is being doubled as part of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) 3. The project was postponed after getting clearance in 2016 due to land acquisition concerns. The project required 56.4 hectares of private property spread over 24 villages in Panvel, Khalapur, and Karjat Talukas. A total of 42.55 hectares of private land has been bought. Furthermore, 4.4 hectares of government land have been acquired.

Furthermore, the project requires the purchase of 9.18 hectares of forest land, which includes 4.96 hectares of government property and 4.22 hectares of private forest. According to an MRVC official, construction on the whole road has begun because CCF Thane has granted work authorization in forest regions.

The stretch from Panvel to Karjat now has a single line that is utilised for long-distance passenger trains and cargo trains. To transform this line into a suburban road, a further track will be installed with new station structures at Mohope, Chowk, Karjat, Chikhale, and Panvel stations. The project has been cleared at a cost of Rs 2,782 crore.

This project’s bridge building and earthwork are already started. The Pune Expressway’s road overbridge and train flyover have been opened. This project will include the construction of 44 bridges, three tunnels, 15 road underpasses (RUB), seven road overbridges, and a flyover.

The initiative, according to MRVC authorities, would reduce the burden on the central railway main line. The Thane-Kalyan line of the central railway’s suburban branch is now one of the busiest lines. The provision of an alternate route for Karjat trains would alleviate traffic on the Thane-Kalyan section because the throng of Krajat trains will be spread.
