Project Details And Status Update For Bhogapuram Airport

Originally, a Greenfield airport in Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, was proposed. Because the current Visakhapatnam Airport is a civil enclave on a naval base, the Navy offered civilian flight slots at the current airport. However, due to space limits, a new airport was required. The projected Bhogapuram Airport will be located on the boundary between Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram. It is around 45 kilometres from Visakhapatnam by NH-16 (Old NH-5) and 25 kilometres from Vizianagaram through NH-43. The property is ideally placed on the east coast and will derive from the region’s wide catchment area.

Prior settling on the present location for the construction, several locations such as Bheemunipatnam, Sabbavaram, Atchutapuram, and Koruprolu were explored.

Bhogapuram International Airport: Project information and an update

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) granted functional permission for the project site in June 2015. The project’s request for proposals (RFP) was released in July 2016. In August 2018, a pre-bid meeting was conducted, and 13 developers expressed interest. GMR Group was finally allowed by the government to develop the project. GMR Group also manages Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) in New Delhi and Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RJIA) in Hyderabad.

The airport was initially scheduled as part of a huge aerotropolis on 5,311 acres of land. Bhogapuram Airport, cargo facilities, an MRO (preservation, restoration, and overhauling) complex, and an aviation academy were all part of it. Consequently, in response to local landowners’ complaints, the project’s layout was changed. The airport would now be built on a 2,200-acre location in and near Bhogapuram, which feeds Visakhapatnam. The development would be built on the public-private partnership (PPP) basis, with the state owning property.

Terminal design at Bhogapuram International Airport

The construction of Bhogapuram International Airport will take place in two stages. In addition to freight, it will serve to travel both domestically and internationally. The terminal will be developed in Phase 1 to accommodate six million passengers per year. After Phase 2, traffic is estimated to increase to 18 million passengers per year. The airport’s projected runway length is 3,800 metres.

Estimated real estate implications of the new Bhogapuram International Airport

The proposed international airport would boost economic activity in North Andhra Pradesh. The new construction will aid in the expansion of the travel operations and hotel industries. Air access to foreign marketplaces would enhance industrial expansion in the districts of Bhogapuram, Srikakulam, and Vizianagaram, creating new job opportunities and residential demand. Bhogapuram is roughly 20 kilometres from the district seat of Vizianagaram. It is around 18 kilometres from the Pydibhimavaram industrial zone and 60 kilometres from the district headquarters of Srikakulam. Increased flights to and from Bhogapuram would make conducting business and travelling simpler, that would benefit the residential and commercial markets in the nearby areas. It will also boost economic activity in Vizianagaram, a textile and commodities centre. This will result in the overall growth of the region’s social and civic infrastructure.
