According to a study, 77% of structural fires took place in residential properties. These house fires were caused by fire hazards present in the house itself.

At times, one doesn’t realize that our basic everyday items can cause a fire too. And, this type of house fire can be lethal. For instance, if you leave your food on the gas for a long time and forget to switch it off, it can cause a house fire. Cooking

No matter how difficult it is to accept, cooking is the leading cause of house fires and a major fire hazard. When you’re cooking, a little oil can escape the pot and start a fire. Cleaning your oven and stove, avoiding the usage of flammable objects near heat sources are a few ways you can help prevent a house fire due to cooking.

Candles

With all the pleasant scents and pretty vibes, candles seem very inviting. However, these little things are a major fire hazard. Ensure to keep candles away from children, cabinets, clothing, papers, and curtains. Always extinguish a candle after you’re done using it.

Electrical appliances

From toasters to washing machines, phone chargers, and what not? We have a variety of electronics at our home. These items are a well-known fire hazard and a major cause of house fires. Ensure to keep your wires in a good condition. Don’t use appliances with an old cord and buy a new one.

Heating

Heating is also a deadly fire hazard. A space heater or a radiator is more likely to cause a house fire as compared to central heating. Make sure you don’t use your radiator as a clothes stand and dry your clothes on it as they can cause a house fire, once they are dry. Ensure to switch off and unplug the space heater when you are not at home.

Smoking

This is a well-known fact that smoking is a fire hazard and is responsible for a lot of house fires. This doesn’t mean you can’t smoke in your home, just be a little careful. Use a sturdy and deep ashtray to extinguish your cigarette bud. Bedrooms are filled with flammable objects like beds, curtains, blankets, pillows, sheets, etc, hence, avoid smoking in your bedroom. Drowsy smoking can also cause a house fire.

These fire hazards are right under your nose and you always seem to miss them. A few safety tips can always come in handy, but it is advisable to buy a smoke detector as it can save your life.
